Embrace failure

Wanna hear something cliché? Embrace failure. How often do you hear it at work and private live?

Ooops, we deleted the customer database. Let's embrace failure, while the business crashes around us.

I made a faulty code, well, embrace failure, amirite?

It's not the way. Failure is an unavoidable part of progress. It's a learning opportunity: not everything works, but we can learn something new from that.

Here's how to embrace failure:

  1. Acknowledge the situation as a failure — don't look for silver lining (yet), just accept the fact that something failed.

  2. Find the cause — dig as deep as you need to uncover and understand the situation that lead to the failure. Was it a faulty component, botched communication, market change, random event?

  3. Come up with a solution — fix it for now, and establish a framework to avoid similar situations in the future.

  4. Document — write down your findings, taken steps, and solutions. Keep it available in case something new happens.

Embracing failure is learning from our past mistakes. Some lessons are harder than others, but the goal is to be better, always.
